I arrived at Chek Lap Kok Airport from Bangkok last week and was truly impressed by its enormity. The attendants were all very helpful.

 As far as new projects go, this one is doing just fine. Initial problems are to be expected, and once on track they will be of no importance.

 Hong Kong people should not take every opportunity to look for fault and attack. Instead, support and encouragement is everyone's duty and to see these difficult times through. The new airport is definitely a plus to Hong Kong. The hiccups should not override the beauty and prestige it represents.

 Chek Lap Kok is by no means a laughing stock of the world, nor is it a 'ninth-class airport' as Lau Kong-wah describes it.

 Time and expertise will remedy the defects. Who will accept the blame for the defects will be a later issue.

ERIC KEE Causeway Bay I am surprised at the furore in response to Chek Lap Kok.

 It is my experience that any new facility, regardless of purpose, goes through a period of difficulty when the new equipment is called upon to perform.

 The response of the Legislative Council, to call for the resignation of the Airport Authority boss, is naive.

 Members of the Council obviously don't know anything about things technical, created by the hand of man, and the certainty that whatever can go wrong probably will.

Arriving at Chek Lap Kok on July 9 from Bangkok, my family and I expected lengthy delays - what else could be expected on the fourth day of such a new facility, transplanted overnight from Kai Tak?  We were surprised. We touched down at noon, bang on schedule. The immigration staff were friendly and efficient. Baggage belt information was clearly displayed and our luggage appeared as we walked to belt eight. The Airport Express was easily found and we stepped straight on to a train, arriving at Central 60 minutes after touchdown. It was the best airport experience of '98 for us.

 Your paper of July 10 seemed to be full of complainers - have they ever moved house overnight?  Good job, well done Hong Kong.
