The editorial technology manager for the South China Morning Post, Joseph Leung, says the Post is working on the millennium bug and set up a Year 2000 taskforce in 1996 to tackle the issue.
'The taskforce is led by Cyril Pereira, assistant general manager for operations, and Raymond Yeung, the IT (information technology) manager,' he said.
'Every department has at least one or two representatives.' Mr Leung said the Y2K issue could be a storm in a teacup or serious enough to halt production. The newspaper used so many different systems that awareness was imperative.
Management organised regular meetings to review progress and the most important systems were editorial and classified advertising, which were at the core of the Post's business.
The ATEX system, a well known dedicated newspaper system used by the Post, runs on J11 mini-computers based on Digital's PDP-11 computer.
This system has performed well for more than 10 years.
