I find the accusations and suggestions of Sam Chulani (South China Morning Post, July 8), regarding the congregating of Filipino maids in Central, really quite shocking. Shame on you, sir. Littering is certainly not a Filipino monopoly by any stretch of the imagination and it is quite obvious by the overflowing refuse facilities seen early Monday mornings in Central that our Filipino maids do attempt to keep our streets tidy. This is more than can be said for members of the remaining 98 per cent of our population who not only litter Central midweek but also the barbecue sites and country parks well away from Central where Filipinos tend not to go. To prohibit Filipinos from conducting themselves at weekends as others can do during the rest of the week is an appalling suggestion with what I consider to have racial implications. If suggestions are to be made then perhaps the Government might think to increase refuse facilities in Central, to provide more covered seating areas around and in Central, and to educate the whole population against littering.
