Ombudsman Andrew So Kwok-wing started his investigation into the airport crisis yesterday with a check on the computer and baggage handling systems.

Airport Authority spokesman Clinton Leeks said papers were being prepared for Mr So, including some dating back seven years.

Terminal Operations general manager Ng Ki-sing said: 'We have explained to the Ombudsman and his staff about the operations, including the computer and baggage handling systems.' The flight information display and baggage handling systems broke down when the airport opened on July 6, sparking chaos.

Mr Leeks said they had been asked to provide documents ranging from information about the construction to the operation of the airport.

'We'll put together whatever documents we have to help them . . . dating back to the formation of the authority and the beginning of our work in 1991 and 1992,' Mr Leeks said.

Asked if the authority would be overburdened coping with different inquiries, Mr Leeks said: 'We'll co-operate with any investigations the community feel are necessary.
