Top marks for morals

Emily Lam

A private tertiary institution has been praised for its emphasis on building and developing character.

Secretary for the Civil Service Lam Woon-kwong said Hong Kong Shue Yan College considered personal development as important as academic achievement.

'It emphasises academic standards, but also nurtures positive moral values,' Mr Lam said.

He was guest-of-honour at the college's awards ceremony, where 260 students received scholarships.

Mr Lam said Shue Yan tried to develop character and social concern.

'However, being a private institution, it faces financial problems as well as pressure from other universities.

'Students are offered a variety of study options at Shue Yan.' Mr Lam said the aim of tertiary education was to disseminate knowledge and foster independent thinking.

'Sadly, it is difficult to strike a balance between the two,' Mr Lam said.

'The college must also be praised for responding to the needs of students with financial difficulties,' Mr Lam said.

Shue Yan vice-president Dr Chung Chi-yung said judging by the number of donors, the college had strong backing from the community.

He said it focused on practical training which helped students adapt to the real world. 'We have maintained high academic standards for 27 years.'
