FORMER Executive and Legislative Councillor Mrs Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai put her family above politics when she turned down an offer to join the latest batch of Hongkong affairs advisers in Beijing.

''I'm making up for what I haven't done in past years,'' said Mrs Fan, who returned from Canada last week after a fortnight visiting her teenage son and daughter. She said a deputy director from the New China News Agency (NCNA) had called her home in Canada and asked if she would like to become an adviser.

''I told them this was not good timing . . . and explained that I could not possibly do a good job now. They were really understanding and respected my views.'' ''To truly reflect the views of Hongkong people, one must have the proper connections. Given that I do not hold public offices any more and I probably will not be spending much time in Hongkong, I think I would have problems accepting the offer.''
