One of the best ways to learn good English is to read magazines and newspapers.

  This is the opinion of Mike Welch, deputy director of the British Council's English Language Centre (business development).

  Mr Welch said youngsters could pick up a lot from these two sources, but they should read appropriate material.

 He said the council's quarterly student magazine, HoYeah, was a useful learning and teaching tool.

  'It allows students to voice their opinions while testing their English skills.'   The glossy 15-page publication is available for free at the council's headquarters in Admiralty and public libraries.

  For the first time, the magazine's July 8 issue was distributed directly to schools.

  Teachers who wanted to use HoYeah in the classroom could apply for 10 copies each.

  They were also advised on how to use the magazine to improve English skills and enrich teaching techniques.

 HoYeah comprises news, interviews, a general knowledge quiz, and a fun and games section.

  Youngsters can test their skimming skills in the Reading Challenges section, which is supported in the latest issue by Young Post . The magazine also contains student contributions, an agony aunt column and a library page.

  Youngsters can also read about club activities, write to foreign penpals, or enter several exciting competitions.

  All these are presented in a colourful, user-friendly format.

 Mr Welch said the feedback had been tremendous.

  'We have received many positive comments from teachers and students,' he said.

   HoYeah has grown from 6,000 copies initially to 28,000 for the current issue.

  Mr Welch said teachers could use the magazine in the classroom.

  They could prepare questions to test their students' reading and comprehension skills.

 Students could also read the articles as part of a classroom discussion.

  Or they could work on the written exercises, he said.
