A competition to design Internet software and databases showed the high degree of understanding students have of information technology (IT), organisers said.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong Internet Application Software Design Competition aimed to strengthen cross-border ties between students and forge links with the computer industry. It was organised by the School of Continuing and Professional Education and the Computer Studies Department at the City University of Hong Kong.

The winning software - Online Video Express - was designed by four City University students taking the Higher Diploma in Computer Studies. They were Shing Chun-kit, Lo Chi-wing, Ho Chi-fai and Chu Chun-hung.

The software can be used for ordering videos through the Internet. 'This is a kind of Internet shopping which we reckon will be a growing trend in the coming decades,' team leader Chun-kit said.

Students from Jinan University in Shandong came second with teaching software designed by Li Kaiyu, Qiu Liming and Wang Jian.

Lo Nam-chong, one of the judges and principal lecturer at Hong Kong Technical College (Chai Wan), said the winning software products were impressive because of the practical and familiar approach the students showed towards IT. 'A high degree of practicality was shown in the designs by students from both the mainland and SAR,' Mr Lo said.
