Several hundred athletes will battle the elements along mountain tracks, through sub- tropical rainforest and over rock faces.

Nothing unusual in that as adventure challenges go, except this challenge is going to take place just minutes away from bustling Central. In the Action Asia Challenge, competitors will start from the Peak on November 29 and will cover some of the most rugged jungle terrain imaginable. All this just 15 minutes from the heart of the city.

Its organiser, Action Asia Foundation, a local charity, hopes the event will achieve its twin objectives. Firstly, it hopes the high-profile challenge will demonstrate the vast recreational potential of Hong Kong's natural environment close to the urban centre.

Secondly, the foundation is hoping to raise funds to further its goal of improving the quality of life of Asian youths by providing outdoor and environmental educational experiences.

The money raised from the challenge will be used for the charity's 1999 Hong Kong and China programme.

Through the race, people may get to see Hong Kong in a completely different light. Shopping malls and high-rise buildings will take a back seat as the action shifts from the urban jungle to the tranquil environment of the nearby countryside.
