Life and career skills to help students beyond the academic field are being promoted by the City University of Hong Kong (CityU).
CityU plans to launch a pilot scheme entitled 'Service Learning Initiative' in September with an initial intake of 100 students.
'The aim of this initiative is to instil in our students important life and career skills that are essential for their personal and professional success,' Professor Edmond Ko Inq-ming, CityU vice-president (education), said.
Fifty second-year students and 50 freshmen will attend a one-week orientation workshop developed by Student Development Services.
Students will then be given job assignments on campus of not more than 10 hours per week and a total of 500 hours in a calendar year and will be paid an hourly rate of $60.
Refresher courses on professional development will also be offered with employers required to provide formal assessment of a student's work once every four months and on completion of a job assignment. Students with unsatisfactory performances will not be allowed to stay in the programme.
