Testing at Hong Kong's new airport and high temperatures, leading to a surge in power consumption, gave utility CLP Holdings a 30.6 per cent jump in turnover for the nine months to June 30.

The company yesterday said in its third-quarter report that turnover rose to $19.1 billion, against $14.61 billion for the same period last year.

Sales were boosted in the third quarter by hot weather, including the hottest April on record in Hong Kong, which had led to a rise in the use of air-conditioning.

A CLP spokesman said the opening of Chek Lap Kok would not result in a substantially higher use of electricity than that consumed in the pre-opening testing period.

Sales rose in all sectors other than manufacturing, with usage by the Government and others growing 12.1 per cent, the highest increase of all sectors.

Sales, including in the mainland, rose 6.6 per cent.
