MEMBERS of the newly formed Liberal Party who are members of the Legislative Council must resign their seats. They should seek re-election in future Legislative Council elections and bye-elections and will, of course, be fully entitled to their places if they are successful. The present Liberal Party Legco members were appointed and, wisely or unwisely, appointed in their personal capacities, not as an organised political faction with its own programme. No organised political platform should have automatic, appointed, status in Legco. All parties, of whatever complexion, should have to compete for public support. The same should also apply to appointed Liberal Party members on District Boards. Surely, every fair minded citizen, let alone democratic minded ones, including even fair minded supporters of the Liberal Party, must agree with this. If members refuse to resign from their appointed positions in Legco and other boards, I cannot see how the Governor can fail to dismiss them unless it is his intention to favour one political party above all others. My opinion is not motivated by the Chinese Government's appointment of some members of the party to consultative positions. That is another matter. NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED
