Hong Kong coach Chris Perry has warned Asian Games gold medal prospect Fenella Ng Kar-loc not to over-exert herself in the buildup to September's World Championships.
Perry, who is overseeing a squad of seven Hong Kong rowers at the Copenhagen International Regatta this weekend, said he did not want to see Ng 'racing to exhaustion' and peaking too soon.
The talented lightweight single sculler - a swimming relay silver medallist at the 1994 Asian Games - is being touted as one of Hong Kong's best chances for gold at the Bangkok Games in Thailand after a string of impressive displays on the world stage.
But coach Perry is anxious to avoid a burnout - and yesterday said he would not be too concerned by Ng's performance at the weekend, when she is also tipped for a medal along with Denmark's Malene Busk.
'We have planned our programme to peak at the World Championships and, most importantly, at the Asian Games,' said Perry.
'We are using the events in Denmark as part of our preparations, but I don't want our rowers making a special effort. Of course, we will try our best to get good results but I am not putting any of the crews under too much pressure.
