A TEENAGER drowned after swimming late at night off a popular Cheung Chau beach, police said yesterday. The boy's two companions - aged 42 and 19 - managed to swim to shore through surf off the island's eastern beach, a mecca for weekend holiday-makers. An off-duty policeman raised the alarm shortly after 11 pm on Friday after realising the three swimmers were in difficulty. Fire Services Department divers scoured the seabed and a Government Flying Services helicopter swept the area with a searchlight. The search was suspended at about 4 am but resumed two hours later. Divers came across the body of Pang Ho-yin, 19, at about 8.30 am five metres from the shore. The teenager was certified dead at Cheung Chau Hospital. His family identified the body. The 19-year-old survivor was flown by helicopter to Eastern Hospital, where he was in stable condition last night. Both teenagers worked for their older companion, police said.
