Student swimmer Chui Wai-chun scored an unexpected triumph when he won the June title for the adidas/Sports Institute Junior Star of the Month Award. 'I was a bit surprised when I was informed of the results. I did not expect to win the award because it has been just a few months since I was first selected to represent Hong Kong at international level,' said Form Four student Wai-chun, who beat three other contenders for the prestigious award. Nominated by the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association for the first time, Wai-chun won two bronze medals at the 1998 Kaohsiung International Age Group Swimming Invitation Championships held in Taiwan this summer. Top junior swimmers from eight countries including South Africa and Switzerland took part in the competition. Wai-chun set Hong Kong junior records in the 800 metres and 1,500 metres freestyle, clocking nine minutes, 3.24 seconds and 17 min, 16.26 sec respectively. 'Indeed, other nominees have also achieved remarkable results in their respective sports and I am delighted to have caught the eye of the selectors,' the Helen Liang Memorial Secondary School student said. He is now in the mainland for training. Wai-chun said he only started serious training two years ago when he decided it was time to lose some weight. Wai-chun won a $2,500 cash prize, an adidas product voucher worth $2,500 and a trophy.
