There have been a number of articles in the South China Morning Post and Sunday Morning Post recently about racial discrimination in Hong Kong and it reminded me of something that happened to me and my brother about a year ago.
We are Chinese and we were about to enter the main door of the Peninsula Hotel when we were stopped by the doorman who without saying a word pointed to my brother's shorts and waved his hand indicating that this particular dress mode was unacceptable.
However, after entering through a side door to patronise some of the shops, we noticed a number of non-Asian males in the main hotel lobby wearing shorts. We also noticed shorts-attired Europeans were not refrained from entering the front door. Perhaps the Peninsula could explain its policy.
