Most parents feel schools have a duty to educate their children about sex, according to a new survey.

A majority of the respondents - about 87 per cent of women and 70 per cent of men - agreed schools should lay the moral foundations by taking up the issue with their students.

The survey, conducted by the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong, also showed 50 per cent of parents would like to discuss the topic with their children at home.

The association's executive director, Dr Susan Fan Ying-su, said parents thought students should be taught sex education in schools, where the children spent most of their time.

But Dr Fan said parents were also responsible for ensuring their children had some sort of understanding about the subject. It was best if children were taught about sex from an early age, she said.

Professor Lam Tai-hing, the chairman of the survey's taskforce, said sex education courses in schools were still inadequate.

Professor Lam said they stressed the physical aspect, while ignoring the psychological aspect.
