Betty Tung's maid not up for new job
Betty Tung Chiu Hung-ping's maid would not apply for the domestic helper's post being offered by the Chief Executive's Office, a spokesman for Tung Chee-hwa said yesterday.
Au King-chi, Mr Tung's press secretary, said Mrs Tung's maid had finished her contract and would not be re-employed.
'It is because of this she needs to recruit another employee to help her. The Filipino maid was paid at [Mrs Tung's] own expense,' Ms Au said.
'But as she's left, we consider it reasonable to deploy staff from the establishment of the Chief Executive's Office to serve her.' Government House staff before the handover included one housekeeper and 30 domestic helpers.
Two helpers have retired and the Chief Executive's Office now wants to fill one of the posts to help Mrs Tung.
The South China Morning Post reported yesterday that the Chief Executive's Office was recruiting a domestic helper at a monthly salary of at least $16,095 - four times the minimum wage of foreign domestic helpers.
