Two junior police officers were jailed in Indonesia yesterday in the first sentences linked to the shootings of four Jakarta students in May.

First Lieutenant Agus Tri Heryanto, 28, was sentenced to 10 months and Second Lieutenant Pariyo, 38, to four months for violating orders during the crackdown outside Trisakti University on May 12.

Jakarta plunged into anarchy within hours.

More than 1,100 people died and an estimated 168 ethnic Chinese women were gang-raped in events that eventually led to the downfall of president Suharto.

The pair are the first of 18 anti-riot officers to be sentenced as the military responds to demands for accountability and democracy.

They were not charged with shootings, but Chief Judge Colonel Saji Suradi said they had violated military law relating to the 'intentional disobedience of an official order or wantonly exceeding the order'.
