A new family entertainment channel is being broadcast by Pakistan Television by satellite across Asia and the Middle East. PTV World was launched last month through ASIASAT- 1 and can be viewed in 38 countries - and across most of Pakistan. The debut was a milestone in the 34-year history of the state-owned Pakistan broadcaster. Until now, its satellite link-up had only transmitted educational programmes abroad on the channel, PTV-2. Now, PTV World hopes to attract more viewers - as well as international advertisers - with a new-look schedule of soap operas, sitcoms, talk shows and magazine-style programmes on fashion, lifestyle and cooking. There are even plans to create some 'interactive' programmes, encouraging participation with viewer phone- ins to talk to favourite movie and television stars - or take part in question and answer shows. Pakistan Television managing director Yusuf Beg Mirza said the idea behind PTV World was to provide viewers in Pakistan and abroad with fresh and attractive programmes. 'PTV World has an edge in a number of ways. We are beginning with a unique selling point since all other satellite channels are reflecting a culture that does not correspond to our own social values,' he said. 'Our message is that we are the only family entertainment channel available on satellite TV. Unlike other channels, it can be watched by the entire family without any hesitation or embarrassment.' For news bulletins, PTV World has a link-up with its PTV-1 channel.
