Customs officers seized 240,000 counterfeit video compact discs (VCDs) during a routine border search. A department spokesman said a mainland-bound truck driver, 45, claimed his truck container was empty at Lok Ma Chau on Saturday. But during a routine search officers found the fake VCDs with an estimated market value of $7.2 million hidden in a secret compartment. The driver was charged with attempting to export undeclared goods and may face a further charge of copyright violation. He was released on bail of $50,000 and is due to appear in Fanling Court on October 9. Counterfeit VCDs worth $134 million have been seized so far this year.
