Mainland donors have pledged 600 million yuan (HK$562 million) for Yangtze flood victims in a gala event organised by China Central Television (CCTV), China Red Cross and the China Benevolent Association. More than 1,000 artists and entertainers performed in a 3.5-hour show called We Are All of One Heart to raise money for the victims. CCTV sent more than 100 representatives to flood-stricken areas so they could report to the gala on conditions there, adding a serious note to the evening's entertainment. Beijing has said that 240 million people - a fifth of the population - have been affected by the Yangtze flood. Not all donations were cash. Some donors, such as the State Grain Reserve Bureau, donated one million plastic bags and some gave clothing and other relief materials that are in demand. The PLA and the People's Armed Police gave 63.8 million yuan. Flood relief funds are still eagerly solicited from the general public, and the post office has set up 800 free hotline numbers on which people can easily pledge donations. Another entertainment fund-raiser is planned for Friday at the Great Hall of People in Beijing.
