Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group has been awarded a US$28 million contract by Beijing Telecommunications Administration. The company said the contract was to expand the operator's GSM (global system for mobile communications) 900 network and to install a GSM 1800 dual band network in Beijing. Under the contract, Motorola CIG will deploy its M-Cell 2 and M-Cell 6 microcellular base stations for the expansion of BTA's GSM 900 network, increasing network capacity by 120,000 subscribers. BTA's initial GSM network was installed in 1994 by Motorola CIG.
