Being unwell doesn't come cheap at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital.

 It charges about $4,000 a time for the kidney dialysis treatment involved in yesterday's accident.

 It is the most exclusive place to receive treatment in Hong Kong and is known as the venue where the rich and famous head for plastic surgery, operations and births.

 The founder of China Motor Bus, Ngan Shing-kwan, 92, and the wife of the late Chinese opera singer Tang Wing-cheung, Hung Jin-mui, have also received treatment at the hospital.

 Jockeys injured during horse races are usually admitted to the hospital for treatment.

 Fees at the hospital match its status - with the most expensive suite a hefty $10,500 a night.

 It is not just any hospital room but a patient's room with attached dining area, another room for relatives to stay overnight and en suite bathrooms.

 And meals, bandages, drugs, doctors, nursing care and laboratory tests all cost extra.

 Socialites use the hospital to deliver their babies and to have nips and tucks under the plastic surgeon's knife, while tycoons go there for cardiac treatment.

 It has an in-vitro fertilisation unit.

 The hospital, in Happy Valley, has views of the Jockey Club racetrack and has recently added two new floors.

 Its menu catering to the tastes of its patients has won rare praise for hospital food.

 Private rooms range from $2,100 upwards to the spacious suite. A bed in a two-person room costs $1,270-$1,340 and a bed in a general ward of three to eight beds is $470-$890.

 But the expensive hospital has not been without its controversial moments.

 It hit the headlines last February when 10 of its male patients were found to be among victims injected with a medical product possibly contaminated with the human form of mad cow disease.

 Last November, a High Court writ was filed accusing a doctor from the hospital of killing a patient by performing surgery with a machine that could not properly be handled unassisted.
