Chang likely to give his serve away

NOW that the humble strawberry has become, thanks to Wimbledon, the international metaphor for the game of tennis, everyone seems to be taking a bite at it.

So here we have Ron Podlas (above), the food and beverage director of the Holiday Inn Golden Mile, doing his strawberry bit to highlight the Salem Tennis Championships being staged in Hongkong from Saturday.

Although he has only a racquet-full here, Ron assures us he has 500 kilograms more where they came from.

And they will all be on offer, with dollops of cream, to fans looking for a touch of this quaint English tradition to go with the hardcourt action during the tournament at Victoria Park.

But while not intending to be churlish, we should point out that Michael Chang - who, as always is the case when he plays in Hongkong, will be the centre of attraction at the event - can't stand the stuff.

Now if only somebody can be persuaded to place a punnet of strawberries in Chang's hand and ask him to close his eyes and think of Wimbledon . . .
