HEAVY rain and overcast skies failed to deter more than 1,500 people from turning up to witness the solar eclipse at the Space Museum yesterday.

The patience of those who queued for an hour to reach the museum roof was rewarded when the clouds parted, despite the raising of tropical cyclone standby signal No 1.

Visitors could watch the eclipse on the roof through telescopes that had been fitted with safety filters.

'I have never seen an eclipse before and I love it,' said nine-year-old Chung Kai-ching.

'I just wished I could see the whole thing without the clouds blocking my view.' The Primary Four student said he wanted to become an astronomer.

The solar spectacle began at 7.28am, peaked at 8.32am and ended at 9.44am.
