Taiwan has denied visas to 13 mainland scholars to attend a conference on cross-strait relations, the Taiwanese media reported yesterday. The scholars were told that any discussion on cross-strait relations could exacerbate political differences between the two sides. Organised by a private foundation in Taipei, the two-day seminar, to be held next weekend at Taiwan University, was to include dozens of academics from Taiwan, Hong Kong and the mainland. The mainland group, including Taiwan affairs expert Li Jiaquan, were to discuss their views on the controversial one-China principle. They will now mail their essays to the organisers. Politicians from all leading political parties in Taiwan will attend the conference.
