An independent committee monitoring the Hospital Authority should be set up to prevent medical blunders, a political party said yesterday.

The Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood said the accidental death of a patient who received the wrong injection in Sha Tin Hospital in June showed the authority needed to be held accountable.

Chairman Frederick Fung Kin-kee said although the accident occurred in June, details were not revealed until this month.

The patients' relatives were not told of the hospital's responsibility.

'Clearly the hospital and the authority intended to avoid shouldering responsibility,' Mr Fung said.

'They should announce details as quickly as possible and inform relevant government departments to avoid the tragedy from happening again.' He said the authority's public complaints committee was not independent as its members were appointed by the body itself.
