DISGRACED legislator Chim Pui-chung will be able to defend his Legislative Council seat on September 9 in person, it emerged yesterday.
A Correction Services Department spokesman said the Commissioner for Correction Services, Raymond Lai Ming-kei, had approved Chim's application to leave his cell to attend the debate on a motion to disqualify him.
On August 3, Chim was jailed for three years for conspiring to forge share transfer documents. He is awaiting appeal.
The spokesman said Chim would be handcuffed while being transported from Stanley Jail to the Legco building, but he would not have to wear prison uniform. Security will be arranged with tomorrow.
Under prison rules, the commissioner may grant a prisoner up to 24 hours' leave of absence.
Chim is believed to be the first jailed legislator to attend a sitting.
