An independent complaints channel for prisoners would also benefit warders, Justice of the Peace and legislator Emily Lau Wai-hing said yesterday. Ms Lau spoke after meeting officials to discuss violence at Ma Po Ping prison on Lantau. 'We understand the officers' worries and we do not mean to cut their powers or hit their morale,' she said. 'But we hope there can be a system which the public and the prisoners have confidence in.' Paul Chan Kam-cheung, another JP attending the meeting, said a clear complaints channel, with specific rules, would allow frontline Correctional Services Department officers to know under what circumstances they could be complained against. Ms Lau said an independent body was needed. The report into the violence would be made public, the Government said.
