I REFER to Mr M. Gardner's letter headlined, ''Why so many holes in the road?'' (South China Morning Post, March 22).
The roadworks in Wong Ma Kok Road are for the laying of sewers which form part of the Stanley Area Sewerage and Sewage Disposal Project to improve beach water quality in the Stanley area.
The three sets of roadworks involved two different main contractors, but their works are well co-ordinated and controlled, such that each set of roadworks is at least 400 metres apart in order to minimise the inconvenience caused to local drivers.
The decision to work on three sections at one time is to minimise the overall duration of works affecting the traffic in Wong Ma Kok Road and it is expected that such works will be completed by the end of this year.
The resident site staff of the above project are well aware of the importance of maintaining the temporary traffic lights in good working order.
They will ensure that both contractors involved will continue to make good efforts in this respect.
