More than 28,000 families who live in Home Ownership Scheme properties built before 1989 will pay more in management fees under a Housing Authority ruling made yesterday.
Fees will be revised for 36 housing estates built from 1973 to 1989 - involving more than 60,000 households - to charge tenants in accordance with flat size and share of ownership.
Currently, families each pay a uniform management fee. In June, the Ombudsman criticised the charging method as unfair, saying it created a situation where small flats were subsidising larger ones.
The Housing Authority's Home Ownership Committee yesterday approved a revision to bring the properties in line with 79 estates completed since 1989.
As a result, more than 28,000 families will have to pay up to $296 extra each month from next April. Some 32,000 families will pay $2 to $193 less.
Committee chairman Walter Chan Kar-lok said the revision would have minimal bearing on the Housing Authority's finances.
