WITH an ounce of luck, Winning Partners should triumph in the last event and give trainer Neville Begg and jockey Robert Thompson some belated compensation for an unlucky last start 1,400 metres when they were second. Drawn at barrier 13 of 13 runners at his last start, Thompson and his mount were stuck out wide in the wilderness throughout and then met interference coming round the home turn. They were boxed in and saw daylight far too late in the proceedings. That the winning margin was a mere head suggests the horse is a good one despite this defeat. He steps out today over the same trip, but Thompson has again had no luck in the barrier draw. This time he is drawn 11 out of a maximum 14 runners at the gates. So a little bit of luck in the running would clearly be much appreciated by Thompson this afternoon. The horse still appears in great shape and worked brilliantly from the barriers down the back straight at the beginning of the week, showing readiness for racing conditions again. On ability he looks destined for Class One and it is hard to go past him this afternoon even allowing for the unsettled weather, bearing in mind Winning Partners has done all his racing on good ground. One horse that would like some cut in the ground this afternoon, however, is Sunday Cruise. The horse, trained by Lawrie Fownes, goes that little bit better with some give in the ground and has been working fairly well coming into this race. He raced up with the pace at his last start over the Sha Tin mile before slowing in the closing stages and looks suited to the slight step back in distance. Fellowship put in a pleasing run last time after a long lay-off and over a trip short of his best, when finishing just over three lengths third over 1,235 metres at Happy Valley. He is probably better over a mile, but still rates a good quinella chance over today's 1,400-metre trip and is a horse running into form. Colourful World, who sensationally beat Winning Partners last start at odds of 56-1, again faces him today but may just have to rest on his laurels as it is hard to see him doing it again. At the bottom of the handicap, Super Class, making his first appearance, could shape as a rough outsider for the tierce at big odds.
