A 15-year-old schoolboy who stood up to a gang of teenage bullies was tortured for almost three hours until he died, a jury heard yesterday.

Luk Chi-wai was 'subjected to a succession of vicious beatings until his health and physical resistance irrevocably broke down', prosecutor Mary Sin said.

Ten teenage boys and three girls yesterday went on trial at the Court of First Instance for his murder. They all deny the charge.

Ms Sin said the defendants had decided to 'severely punish' Luk after he advised an adult who had been bullied by their gang to go to the police. The teenagers saw this as a betrayal, the court heard.

Luk was lured to the Sau Mau Ping flat of the friend he had tried to help at 9.10pm on May 14 last year.

'There he was subjected to extremes of physical violence, torture and ill-treatment by the defendants individually and jointly for hours. As a result, he suffered serious injuries and eventually died around midnight,' Ms Sin said.

The Form Three student was attacked with fists and feet and also beaten with iron water pipes, plastic broomsticks, wooden poles, a buckled leather belt, an umbrella and folding stools, she said.
