TMI Telemedia International Hong Kong is the international arm of Telecom Italia, the world's fifth- largest carrier.

In July, TMI set up a system known as Mondonet for businesses looking to use the kind of technology the Internet is based on, but over a private network.

Mondonet is said to be more cost-effective and secure than any other system.

Sergio Bartoletti, the executive director of TMI Asia-Pacific, said growing businesses were becoming more dependent on high-speed, secure communications and this was what TMI could provide.

'As businesses grow to become global enterprises, their employees become increasingly mobile and they grow to depend upon on-line communications with their customers and suppliers,' he said.

'An intranet and extranet can effectively enable different offices, mobile employees, business partners and customers to communicate with the corporation and with each other effectively.' The only problem with this is that it can be quite expensive to do on your own. Unfortunately, for some, the public Internet is simply not secure enough.

'Many corporations are still not comfortable using the Internet to send corporate mission-critical data.' The solution, Mr Bartoletti said, was TMI's Mondonet.
