3Com has two new Megahertz PCMCIA products. The Garfield is a 10/100 Mbps local area networking card with an XJack pop-out connector for the phone/network jack. The connectors are built with Ultrem, a strong and heat-resistant plastic. The Gonso is a 10/100 Mbps LAN card that adds a 56 Kbps V.90 modem. You can dial out with the Gonso and log on to your network. The Garfield will cost about $1,300 and the Gonso about $2,280.
Illustrator 8.0, from Adobe Systems, reportedly includes more than 100 enhancements and new features to this graphics software. Among them are the ability to view and print double-byte characters, compatibility between Macintosh and Windows versions, and new navigation and drawing features such as four new types of brushes. It can preserve layers when exporting to Photoshop, making it easier for designers. Street price is $4,600, but registered users can get an upgrade for $1,000. Registered users of competing programs CorelDRAW and Freehand can buy Illustrator 8 for $1,550.
