Tonight really is it for Murphy Brown (Pearl, 6.50pm). Since Candice Bergen insists she has played the hard-nosed hack for the last time, it makes little difference to loyal fans whether the series ends with her passing into the great newsroom in the sky, or remaining with her show, 'FYI'.

When the crunch came, Bergen was apparently so moved that she burst into tears on set, all over tonight's special guest George Clooney, and she had to take some time to control herself before filming could continue.

Apart from Clooney, Murphy is also visited by several important industry figures in this episode. These include series creator Diane English (who also did Ink, which is perhaps why Murph made a guest appearance there last week), and series executive producer Marc Flanagan.

The story of tonight's Steven Spielberg movie The Sugarland Express (World, 9.30pm) was inspired by the real-life drama of a convict, sprung by his wife to help her snatch back their baby from the authorities, who were insisting that the child be adopted.

This all took place in 1969 in Texas, and achieved some notoriety.

The crowds really did turn out to help the unfortunate couple as they whizzed across the state.

Spielberg was clearly more interested in the idea of staging a dramatic chase movie than he was in the emotional drama, and the movie is a triumph of car choreography.
