Unionists have condemned the dismissal of a container terminal union leader a day after he met his employer to discuss recent forced departures of fellow workers.

Hong Kong International Terminals Limited fired its Group Employees General Union chairman Wong Chun-lung on Wednesday.

'I was distributing copies of a notice concerning the meeting in the workers' mess when I was asked to see the personnel department,' Mr Wong said.

'Once there, they revealed that I had been sacked because I had failed to meet the employees' productivity appraisal requirement.' Mr Wong denied the charge, claiming he recently received a letter of commendation from the company for his services as an equipment operator.

He accused his former employer of discriminating against the union, which has been alarmed by the company's recent restructuring programme.

During the past four weeks, 123 workers reportedly have been 'pushed' out of the company through various scare tactics, the union claims. The company has 1,700 workers.
