A parcel of land along the Shenzhen River should be turned into a zone to develop Chinese herbs and biochemical technology, an adviser to Tung Chee-hwa suggested yesterday.

Cheng Yiu-tong, a Strategic Development Commission member, said the central Government had decided to allow the SAR to manage an area belonging to Shenzhen at the border.

The one square kilometre plot will be left to the SAR Government after the Shenzhen River is straightened.

During a visit to Shenzhen on Tuesday, Mr Cheng suggested to Shenzhen Municipal Government Party Secretary Zhang Gaoli that the land should be jointly developed as a hi-tech and high value-added industrial zone.

The zone, he said, should be a home for green scientific research for the development of Chinese herbs, health foods and biochemical technology.

'Western countries are not confident about Chinese herbs because they don't trust our production methods. With Hong Kong's management skills, the land can be turned into a base for producing herbs for China and other countries,' Mr Cheng said.
