Complaints that officials had to lose money to their superiors at mahjong to gain promotion have been received by the chairman of a Legco panel.
But Executive Councillor and public service panel chairman Tam Yiu-chung said no evidence had so far been lodged to back up such claims.
The panel heard that officials had acted over a 20 per cent rise in government corruption allegations. The Civil Service Bureau said it was fully alert regarding the increase.
Complaints against civil servants in the first half of this year totalled 743, a 22 per cent increase from 608 during the same period last year.
The number of cases with evidence to pursue also rose 17 per cent to 476 during the period.
'We are very concerned the complaint figures have shot up,' Deputy Secretary for the Civil Service Anissa Wong Sean-yee said.
