HONGKONG travellers have been among the victims of a gang of highway robbers who have attacked buses along a 60-kilometre stretch of road between Zhuhai and Zhongshan. Sources said at least two public buses were robbed last week. Public Security Bureau (PSB) officers arrested two suspects in one of the hold-ups but those involved in the other managed to escape with money, jewellery and travel documents. On Saturday night, a 24-seater bus was stopped by four men while travelling from Zhongshan to Zhuhai. After boarding the bus, the robbers whipped out knives, threatened the passengers and ordered them to hand over their money, watches and travel documents. On Thursday night a Kee Kwan Motorway Company bus with about 20 passengers was robbed while travelling from Shanshui to Gongbei, which borders Macau. When the bus was leaving Dongfeng Town in Zhongshan, four youths boarded after buying tickets to a smaller village. They produced knives and ordered passengers to hand over money, watches and jewellery. A team of patrolling PSB plain-clothes officers became suspicious and stopped the bus. The robbers tried to escape, but one of the officers fired a warning shot and arrested two of the robbers. The other two youths escaped in the dark.
