International Bowl winner Catalan Opening, who gave superstar Darren Beadman his farewell Hong Kong winner, returns in December to clash with Oriental Express in the showpiece International Cup. Catalan Opening has been entered for the 1,800-metre Cup by legendary trainer Bart Cummings who feels emphatically that seven furlongs is no longer anything like the best distance for his stable star. Although it is officially an invitation race, there is little chance of Catalan Opening not representing Australia. Catalan Opening's superb Bowl win and subsequent efforts in Australia raise the prospect of a tantalising clash with Hong Kong hero Oriental Express. The superb run of Oriental Express in the Yasuda Kinen in June where he was narrowly beaten by now European Group One winner Taiki Shuttle has elevated Hong Kong in the international standings. Cummings' racing manager Bill Charles, who lodged Catalan Opening's entry, said: 'There is no doubt in Bart's mind that the better trip now is 1,800 metres. Catalan Opening is a genuine Group One horse in Australia and it will be very interesting to see just how he will go in Hong Kong again against Oriental Express. 'The plan is to run Catalan Opening in the Cox Plate and then send him to Hong Kong for the big race. 'It is a good preparation and, barring anything unforeseen, the plan will not change,' said Charles. The Cox Plate is one of the great races on the Australasian calendar and the country's best weight-for-age event.
