Canadian Pacific (CP) is to acquire the container shipping business of Australia New Zealand Direct Line (ANZDL) from its two owners, SCAC Delmas Vieljeux of France and Brierley Investments of New Zealand. ANZDL will become part of CP Ships, the container shipping business. CP chief executive Ray Miles said: 'The acquisition of ANZDL builds on the Australasian regional platform we created when we acquired Contship Containerlines in October 1997.' The acquisition includes ANZDL's container shipping services and brand name in two key regional trades, between the US West Coast and Australia/New Zealand. Mr Miles said the acquisition would increase CP Ships' revenue and container volume by nearly 15 per cent. Contship Containerlines operates a service between Europe and Australasia and a round-the-world service including US East Coast to Australasia. Mr Miles said CP Ships could now lead the field in three key regional markets - the North Atlantic, Latin America and Australasia. CP Ships is finalising a joint venture with TMM of Mexico.
