Share options could be given instead of bonuses as a way to help cut costs at Hongkong Telecom, workers suggested yesterday.
The proposal came on the eve of talks between unions and management over the suspended 10 per cent across-the-board pay cuts.
Bonuses or golden plaques awarded for performance could be replaced by bonus share issues for the company, said Fan Kwok-fai, general secretary of the Hong Kong Telecom Employees Union.
'This could shore up morale and give people a sense of belonging, rather than handing out money.' The suggestion was made as the union battled to find common ground with management.
Hongkong Telecom spokesman Anita Choi Kwok-mi said the proposal, among others, was being considered last night. The company had always had incentives and bonus schemes.
In its efforts to streamline its cost structure, the company suggested natural wastage and staff redeployment instead of sackings.
