Each of the 451 days Alan Ng was held prisoner was a nightmare - not knowing whether he had been kidnapped, whether he would be freed, even whether he would live or die.

'It was hell on earth. They kept me with murderers on death row and rapists in the same room,' he said.

'They hinted that I too would be sentenced to death if I didn't give in.

'Every time they interrogated me, they asked where my money was and how much property I had.

'They never told me why they arrested me and when I asked why, they just ordered me to confess. It wasn't until the day before I was released that I knew the exact reason for the kidnapping.

'They told me they were state security officials when they kidnapped me and told my family that I had 'endangered state security'.

'Only after I was transferred to Hunan did they reveal their true identity.' Though apparently held for financial gain, Mr Ng was not spared the pain inflicted on criminals.
