I refer to 'ESF students need Cantonese', (South China Morning Post, September 8) by name and address supplied. When the writer arrived at the age of 12, why didn't they spend their days picking up vocabulary and phrases on their own? It would have been much more fun than waiting for a school to do it.

My sons were offered Cantonese lessons during their time with the ESF but, much to my disappointment, this was not in favour 20 or so years ago. But their father modestly professes Cantonese and recognition of Chinese characters.

There have been immeasurable benefits and enjoyment because of those early days of total fascination with the language.

Since then I've taken several courses, all of which have been valuable.

The correspondent should let the Legislative Council look after the education policy stuff, while he or she takes advantage of their interest and makes up for those first few days after arriving in Hong Kong.
