As a member of the captive MTR travelling public, I have experienced continual annoyance with the Octopus card due to the inability of the Creative Star consortium (read the MTR) to provide efficient card-reloading facilities.
My latest frustrating experience with an 'Out of Order' Octopus value-reload machine occurred earlier this week at Tsim Sha Tsui station where the machine outside the Hang Seng Bank was again not functioning.
There were multiple ticket-issuing machines for single-trip tickets, but only one Octopus machine.
With no manned ticket office in sight and in the absence of any indication of where the nearest manned office was, I resorted to walking through the turnstile.
On my exit at Sheung Wan I attempted to explain the problem to the ticket office and reloaded the ticket.
This scenario is becoming a frequent event and slowly creating a mindset, even in the most law-abiding citizen, that if the MTR does not consider it appropriate to have sufficient machines to cater for card holders perhaps it's OK to keep walking through the barriers.
