To encourage greater use of information technology (IT) in classrooms, the department has joined forces with the Lions Club of Metropolitan Hong Kong to launch two programmes.

The Software Reference Bank and IT in Education Excellence Award are aimed at broadening the scope of resources available to teachers and students, while also encouraging use of computers for self-study.

The programmes are part of the department's 'Synergy in the 21st Century: Information Technology in Education' project.

Senior Assistant Director of Education Anthony Tong Kai-hong said Hong Kong must make full use of the Internet as a learning aid.

'Education should keep abreast of the developments in today's changing world. Teachers can no longer spoon-feed their students with what they learnt in the old days,' he said.

The reference bank, comprising an on-line information source and a library in Hunghom, will provide a centralised educational software database for teachers and students.
