The wines of Spain have been a well kept secret in Hong Kong. Only recently have a significant number of vintages begun to appear on supermarket shelves and restaurant wine lists.

Companies such as Spanish Fine Wines have cellars which display wines from some of the nation's 40 major recognised wine regions; there is a lot more to Spain's winelands than the famed Rioja.

The fine reds from that area are rivalled by Rivera del Duero, which many experts liken to Burgundy.

The Penedes boasts good whites, and Jerez is the home of sherry and in the countless tapas bars of Barcelona - one of the world's most sophisticated cities - there is always a variety of sparkling wines nestling in silver ice buckets amid the sardines and roasted aubergines.

Trying these wines is the best way to learn some aspects about the country.
