Legislators from across the political spectrum last night unanimously endorsed a motion urging the Government to set a timetable to rehouse all cage home dwellers.
Key political groups were dissatisfied with its reluctance to forgo classifying cage homes as a form of housing and to scrap them.
Sponsoring the motion, Democratic Party legislator Lau Chin-shek called on the Government to review and formulate housing policies relating to cage home dwellers and single people.
He said it should feel ashamed at 'legalising cage homes' rather than scrapping them.
Although the Home Affairs Department has claimed that there are about 2,000 cage home lodgers in Hong Kong, Mr Lau said the Society for Community Organisation had estimated the actual figure was up to 10,000.
Gary Cheng Kai-nam, of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, said the Government had merely focused on improving fire safety.
